When creating Poa Poa, we decided to use local suppliers and contractors. The bungalows were covered with roofs made of makuti—palm leaves. All the furniture was crafted for us by local carpenters (known as fundi mbao). Many of the furnishings are sourced from local island manufacturers.
The vases and ashtrays in our restaurant are made by Chako—a company that recycles used glass bottles to give them a new life.
At breakfast, we will treat you to Tanzanian coffee and delicious homemade jam.
In our bathrooms, you will find local Inaya cosmetics, and in our spa—Mwani Zanzibar cosmetics from a factory producing skincare products based on seaweed grown in Zanzibar.
Bedspreads and pillowcases in the rooms were sewn by a local tailor using local materials, and some of the pillows come from Sasik—a craft workshop where local women create unique hand-made pillowcase patterns.
The photos in the rooms are my own work—they were framed in beautiful original frames by a local carpenter.
On the terrace table, you will find a traditional Zanzibar game called bao. Feel free to ask one of the staff members; they will be happy to teach you how to play. (WARNING! This game is addictive.)
Our rooms are decorated in a natural Zanzibar style. Each room is equipped with air conditioning and a private bathroom. The rooms offer great views of the ocean. Bath and beach towels are provided. An extra single bed can be provided in each room for a third person. The price of the rooms includes a delicious breakfast served in our restaurant.
